Media reports claim that Iranian authorities have detained foreign diplomats who were spies for them. The British diplomat was afterwards expelled.
Tehran: According to state media, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have detained a number of foreign diplomats on suspicion of "espionage," including a British citizen.
State-run Fars TV in Iran reports that the Revolutionary Guards' intelligence unit discovered and later detained spies from foreign embassies.
A British diplomat had been removed from the nation, according to Fars TV.
State television reports that Giles Whitaker has been recognised as the detained British ambassador. In the centre of Iran, Giles Whitaker was detained.
The British diplomat has been accused by state television of photographing in places where military drills were taking place. A diplomat by the name of Whitaker may be heard speaking on camera in a clip that state TV has published.
Since 2018, Giles Whitaker has served as the British Mission's deputy chief in Tehran.
The state TV reporter stated that the envoy was "among those who travelled to the Shahdad desert with their families," mentioning a location in central Iran.
"As can be seen in the video, a guy was snapping photographs of the restricted area where military drills were taking place," the Iranian journalist added.
The state news outlet Fars stated that "Giles Whitaker was ejected from the nation after apologising," contrary to media reports that the guy was banished from the region after making amends.
But in a statement provided to Sky News, the Foreign Office said: "Reports of the arrest of a British diplomat in Iran are completely false."
